The Acheron River, one of the most mystical rivers in the Balkans, is located in the Epirus region in northwestern Greece and is known for its exceptionally cold, clear water that springs from the Tomaros mountain massif in the region of Souli. In ancient times, it was considered one of the mythical crossings to the underworld, surrounded by stories about Hades and the souls that cross the boundary of the worlds. Today, it represents a blend of scientific and mythological interest—a unique ecosystem in a dramatic canyon.
There are places that you don't forget because of photographs, but because of the feeling that remains in your body. For me, the Acheron River is just such a place.

Even as I approached the canyon, the landscape began to change its rhythm—mountains, narrow gorges, the scent of water and stone, and that special silence that only places with a powerful past possess. Acheron is not just the natural beauty of Epirus; it is a river that carries the weight of a story in Greek mythology, marking the boundaries and crossings into the world of Hades. It is precisely this combination of myth and reality that makes it so special.
The most beautiful part of the experience was entering the river itself. The water is incredibly cold, almost shocking with the first step, but crystal clear and unreal in its beauty. As you walk through the current, between the rocks and through the narrow passages of the canyon, you feel as if you are simultaneously in a natural adventure and an ancient tale. Every step requires attention, but this very slowing down compels you to truly see everything—the color of the water, the texture of the rocks, the light entering the gorge.

Side springs
Walking through Acheron is an exciting and somewhat challenging experience—the bottom is filled with large stones, and the water is icy due to numerous side springs, averaging only a few degrees, so water shoes are practically essential. In certain areas, the river is deep enough for a brief swim, if you're brave enough. In the lower section, it is also possible to rent a boat for descent, but that part, while beautiful, is not as impressive as passing through the gorge and walking through the river itself.
If you are going with children, a great idea is to bring a small inflatable boat for the sea—the water is very cold, so it will be much more comfortable for the kids to float while the adults walk and enjoy the scenery. Since the current is not fast, this way of exploring can be both fun and practical for families.
It’s an excellent excursion if you’re staying in the Parga area, especially during hot summer days — the cold waters of the Acheron and the shade of the gorge provide real refreshment and a completely different experience from the sea.
